Variational: the project and how it works

What the Variational protocol is, how it differs from the applications built on it, and which limitations its own documentation describes.

Variational is a protocol for trading derivatives with on-chain settlement. Users do not interact with the protocol directly but through applications built on it: as of October 2026, Omni is running (its mainnet is in private beta), while Pro is described in the documentation but has not launched.

In this section we separate the layers of the system, explain who the counterparty to trades is, where prices come from and how settlement works. Claims about the project’s advantages are attributed: they are statements by the team, not facts established by the editors.
