FIELDNOTES is an educational publication about the Variational protocol, crypto infrastructure technology and how derivatives markets work.

What this publication is

We explain how systems work: where prices come from in different trading architectures, how outside data reaches the blockchain, what gets recorded on-chain during settlement, why applications use layer 2 networks and what risks lie behind terms such as margin, liquidation and funding. Our articles are written for readers who want to understand the mechanics without using trading applications.

Every article includes a list of sources and a fact-check date. We attribute the project’s claims about itself (“according to the project’s documentation”) and do not present them as established fact.

Relationship with Variational

FIELDNOTES is commissioned by the Variational team. It is not an independent publication and not official project documentation.

The publication is commissioned by the Variational team. For that reason, we do not describe FIELDNOTES as independent media. Nor is the publication official project documentation: the current rules and terms of the applications are set only on the project’s website and in the Variational documentation.

How articles are prepared

The launch articles were drafted with AI-based tools and then checked against sources: every claim about the project was matched to a specific page of the official documentation or a dated publication, and technology claims to protocol documentation and materials from regulators and research organizations. A register of verified claims and disputed points is maintained alongside the site’s source code.
